EARL LIGHTCAP:

Earl married Katie GARNER (daughter of Charles and Lizzie GARNER), who was the sister of Ben GARNER.  Earl and Katie's daughter Thelma would grow up to marry John Andrew "Andy" RESSLER.  

Typical of tangled Lancaster County roots: Ben GARNER married Cora GROFF and their oldest son Ralph married Reba RESSLER, who was the older sister of "Andy" RESSLER.  So the children of Andy and Thelma are related to me on both my RESSLER and GARNER family lines. I remember discussions growing up about them being double cousins to the rest of us.

FRANK RESSLER FAMILY 1937

THE FRANK RESSLER FAMILY - 1937:

 

 

 

The story of this picture as told by Reba (RESSLER) GARNER was that in the early stage of her pregnancy with her first child, the doctor told her that due to a hernia (or hernia repair), she would not live thru the pregnancy. 

Her parents wanted a picture of all their children together as a family group, so this photo was taken before Reba started to show.  Standing in the back (l to r): Anna, Andy, Clarence, Victor, and Mary.  Seated in the front (l to r): Martha "Marty", Frank, Charles, Reba, Bertha "Bert", and Emma.

I remember this photo as hanging upstairs in the bedroom by the door.  Grandma and I talked about it many times.

By the way, the baby girl was born healthy, and lived 1937-2016. She was also my mom Pauline.

HENRY HOSTETTER GARNER 1886-1975

Henry was the son of Charles and Elizabeth (MUSSELMAN) GARNER.  He was born in Jan. 1886 and died in Feb. 1975.  

He was married to Goldie SENER - they had 3 known children: Harry (1909 - ?), Vesta, who was also known as Bertha (1912 - ?), and Helen (1915 - ?). 

He worked for the railroad. As far as I know, he lived his entire life in Lancaster County, PA

KATRYNE "KATE" GARNER

KATRYNE "KATE" GARNER was a daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Musselman) Garner and she married Earl Lightcap.  One of their children was Thelma, who married John Andrew Ressler - the son of Frank and Bertha Ressler and younger brother to my grandma Reba (Ressler) Garner.  I do remember a few comments about all the kids of those 2 marriages being double cousins, and the joking that went with it at family reunions.

Earl and Katryne are buried at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Quarryville, PA only a few stones from her parents.

ELIZABETH (LITTLE) APPLEBACH 1850-1931:

Per the 1860 PA Census (Landisville, East Hempstead Township):
Samuel Little, age 66, a farm laborer, born in PA
Elizabeth Little, age 60, keeping house, born in PA
Calvin Little, age 22, farm laborer, born in PA
Elizabeth Little, age 20, born in PA
Abram Perry, age 2 months, born in PA
John Dutt, age 8, born in PA

My note: I do not at this point know who the 2 children are or what the relationship is.

The Lancaster Daily Intelligencer of Aug. 29, 1889 mentions Elizabeth Applebach very casually in an article "A Stable Destroyed" about a barn fire.  Apparently Abraham and Elizabeth were renting a barn at 761 N. Lime St, Lancaster and it caught fire - and over $300 worth of bundled rags were destroyed.  The article goes on to say that it might have been set by a tramp who was turned away without a meal earlier.

 (pg. 233) Elizabeth Applebach (widow of Abraham) is listed as living at 431 N. Mary.  Also living at the same address are John W. and Taylor Z. Applebach.

1916 Lancaster, PA Directory:
(pg. 238) Elizabeth Applebach (widow of Abraham) is listed as living at 431 N. Mary. Also living at the same address are John W., May V., and Taylor Z. Applebach.

1917 Lancaster, PA Directory:
(pg. 233) Elizabeth Applebach (widow of Abraham) is listed as living at 431 N. Mary. Also living there are sons John W. and Taylor Z. and May V (my note: this was Taylor's wife).

Pennsylvania, County Marriages 1185-1950:
On 14 August 1920 Zechria Taylor Applebach married Jennie Kathryn Stover in Dauphin County, PA. Taylor's parents are listed as Abraham Applebach and Elizabeth Little.  Jennie's parents are listed as John Stover and Mary Woolf.  My note: This is Taylor's third marriage and Jennie was pregnant.  According to family lore, Taylor took her out of Lancaster County to marry because she did not know he had been married before and he stated on the license he had not been married before.

1923 Lancaster, PA Directory:
(pg. 137) Elizabeth Applebach (widow of Abraham) is listed as living at 431 N. Mary.  Her blind son, John W. is still living with her.

1925 Lancaster, PA Directory:
(pg. 140) Elizabeth Applebach (widow of Abraham) is listed as living at 431 N. Mary.  Her blind son John W. is still living with her.

1927 Lancaster, PA Directory:
(pg. 113) Elizabeth Applebach (widow of Abraham) is living at 317 Marton.

1929 Lancaster, PA Directory:
(pg. 92) Mrs. Elizabeth Applebach is listed as living with her son John W and his wife Katie at 647 High.

1931 Lancaster, PA Directory:
(pg. 80) Elizabeth Applebach (widow of Abraham) is listed as living with her son John W and his wife Katie at 647 High.

Certificate of Death (#71299): 
Elizabeth Applebach is listed as living at 647 High, Lancaster. Her husband was Abraham Applebach.  She was born Oct. 15, 1850 and  80 years, 9 months, and 8 days old. Her place of birth was York County, PA. Her father was Samuel Little and her mother Elizabeth Marley, both born in PA. The undertaker was Fred Groff and the burial was at Woodward Hill Cemetery.  The person giving the info was her son, Taylor Applebach.

HENRY YOST, JR. (1826-1913)

HENRY YOST, JR. (1826-1913):

The first mention of Henry Yost that I have found is in the 1850 Pennsylvania census for Lancaster.  He is listed as living in the household of Barbara Brimmer. He is listed as age 23 and a laborer. Also listed in the same household is Reuben Yost, age 21 and a house painter (I don't know if or what the relationship between these 2 Yost men may have been yet). Both of them are listed as born in Pennsylvania.

In the family Bible of Henry Yost is listed that he married Barbara Caskey 14 November 1854 by G. Fred Krotel, the pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, PA. Barbara Caskey is listed as the daughter of Barbara Brimmer.

In the 1860 census, Henry is listed as 30, living in East Lampeter Township (Lancaster County) and being a laborer.  His wife Barbara is 29, Anna Elizabeth (my gr-gr-gr grandmother) was 4, Benjamin was 3, and Emma was 1.

In the June 1863 Pennsylvania Civil War Draft Registration (pg. 284) he is listed as living in Lampeter, age 37, and a laborer.  Unlike some men on the same page, he did not claim exception or supply a substitute.  I do not know if he actually was called to fight (yet).

Per the family Bible, Henry's wife Barbara died 13 September 1870.  My note: this is 10 days after the birth of their youngest child (Catherine b. 3 Sept. 1870)

Per the family Bible, Henry married for the second time to Matilda Mary (Maria) Miller of West Lampeter Township on 10 October 1878 by C. Elvins Houpt, the asst. pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity in Lancaster. Witnesses were Christiana Kendig and Mary J. Powell.

In the 1890 Lancaster Directory, Henry is listed as living in Lampeter and being a laborer.

In the 1896 Lancaster Directory (pg. 528), Henry is listed as being a laborer living in Lampeter.

In the 1898 Lancaster Directory, Henry is listed as a farmer living in Lampeter.

Matilda Mary (Maria) died on March 18, 1898. Here is her obit:

In the 1899 Lancaster Directory (pg. 843) Henry is listed as a laborer in Lampeter.

In the 1900 census, Henry is listed as living in the household of John and Amanda C Armont (Arment). Matilda is not mentioned here. Henry is listed as being widowed, age 75, born in Pennsylvania and as the father-in-law of the head of house.  Amanda was born in 1863 per the family Bible.

In the 1910 census, Henry is found in the same house as 1900 (in Strasburg) as 83, widowed, born in PA, and the father-in-law.

Per the "Pennsylvania and New Jersey Church and Town Records 1708-1985" Henry Yost was born 7 May 1826 and died in Lancaster 20 August 1913, age 87. Per this same record is listed "Maria" wife of Henry (1835-1898) and Barbara ( ? - 1870).

Per his death certificate, he was retired and died of valvular endocarditis. He is listed as born in Lancaster County.  His father's name is _________Yost, and his mother's maiden name is unknown. The person who supplied the personal info was John Arment at Strasburg RR #2.
