GARNER, RALPH GROFF IN THE US CENSUS

RALPH GROFF GARNER IN THE US CENSUS:

Ralph is listed in the US Census for Penn first in the 1910 as 3 years old (b. 1906) and living with his parents Ben and Cora (Groff) Garner in southern Lancaster Co., PA.  Also in the household is his younger sister Mary (b. 1908).

In the 1920 US Census for Penn., he is listed as living with his maternal grandparents Joseph C. and Josephine (Myers) Groff in southern Lancaster Co., PA.

In the 1930 US Census for Penn., he is listed as 22 years old and living back with his parents and younger siblings: Mary (b. 1908), Ella (b. 1910), Clyde (b. 1913), and Lester (b. 1915).

In the 1940 US Census for Penn., he is listed as living in Lancaster, PA with his wife Reba M (Ressler) Garner (b. 1913) and daughter Pauline R. Garner (b. 1937).

GARNER, LESTER CHARLES (1915-2012)

LESTER CHARLES GARNER: He was the youngest son of Ben and Cora (Groff) Garner and was born on May 28, 1915 in Quarryville, PA.  He married D. Romaine Troop (b. 6/19/1918 and died 5/31/2007) on Dec. 6, 1940 in Elkton, Maryland. They have 2 daughters: Donna (Garner) Kreider and Doris (Garner) Lownsberry . Lester died on Dec. 12, 2012 in Lancaster County, PA.

The above photo was taken in April 1956 for their 50th wedding anniversary (they married April 9, 1906): Cora and Ben Garner (seated).  Behind are the children (L to R): Mary, Lester, Ralph, Clyde, and Ella.

APPLEBACH, WINFIELD SCOTT (1886-1979)

WINFIELD SCOTT APPLEBACH:

Per the Journal of Lancaster County Historical Society, Vol. 76 1972  (pg. 127)

 Winfield Applebach, known as Scottie to his friends, worked as a second hand member of the stage crew of the Fulton Opera House in 1909.  Now 78, he can identify and explain the set up of the theater and give a clear picture of the back stage operations.

Scottie says, "We had the finest shows in the East. I tell my wife...people known as actors today could not even walk in the back door of the Fulton Opera House."

Before marrying Eva Moyer, he was married to Mabel Overly.  Below is the marriage license:

According to the marriage license of Eva Moyer and Scott, he and Mabel divorced in 1911 on grounds of desertion. Scott always said he had no children, however I found a birth certificate for a daughter born to him and Mabel.

In the 1910 census, Mabel and Catherine are living with her parents.  As yet, I have not continued the search to see what happened to Catherine. They are living on Locust Street and are line number 42 and 43.

According to the Veteran Burial Index - Lancaster County Archives  Winfield Scott Applebach was a WWI vet who died on May 20, 1979 and is buried in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery.

APPLEBACH, SCOTT & TAYLOR (80TH BIRTHDAY)

Yes, they are identical twins.  Both boys were named after military generals from the 1800's and they generally went by their middle names.  Please note that Taylor used his first name as his middle initial (which should be Z) and he had 6 living children - not 6 daughters.

APPLEBACH, VARGE RICHARD (1920-1992)

VARGE RICHARD APPLEBACH: He was born 11/12/1920 in Lancaster, PA and died 11/5/1992 in Beaumont, TX. He died of cancer. He joined the US Army in 1936 and served in the Pacific theater until 1945. He married Marjorie L. Goza 10/19/1947.  They had 2 sons, John and Richard. He retired an WO4 in approx. 1976.

He was the son of Taylor Z. and Jennie C. (Stover) Applebach. He was the first of his adult siblings to die. His funeral was on 11/7/1992 at the Kelley-Watkins Chapel and he is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Beaumont, TX.

APPLEBACH, VARGE RICHARD (1920-1992)

VARGE R.APPLEBACH: This photo was taken of Warrant Officer Applebach during annual practice at Ft. Sill, OK on 6/20/1954. He is shown receiving orders via radio.

Varge was the oldest son of Taylor and Jennie Applebach.  He apparently went in the US Army at age 16 by getting his uncle, Winfield S. Applebach (his father's identical twin), to sign his enlistment papers when his parents refused to do so. He enlisted in 1936, and retired 40 years later.

APPPLEBACH, SCOTT & EVA (MOYER) - 65TH ANNIVERSARY

SCOTT & EVA (MOYER) APPLEBACH:

Winfield Scott APPLEBACH "Scott" was the identical twin of my grandfather Zachary or Zacharias Taylor APPLEBACH. They were well known around Lancaster, PA.  Their notoriety came from several things:

• an unusual last name
• they were identical twins who apparently spent much of their younger years in mischief and petty crime
• known for being not good husbands
• Scot was a well known bartender and bouncer, and by many accounts worked most of the downtown area Lancaster bars prior to his retirement
• Both Scott and Taylor were in the Lancaster newspaper in their later years for human interest stories 

Here is an interesting article about Scott and Eva that was printed Aug. 31, 1977 - they were noting 65 years of marriage.

Here is the marriage license.  He was 25 and already divorced for desertion of first wife.  Eva had never been married.

Scott and Eva died within just a few months of each other.  Here are their obits.  Grandma Garner always made sure I got clippings of anything to do with family from the area newspapers.
