LAZARUS WOLF

LAZARUS WOLF:

The first listing I have found of Lazarus Wolf was in the 1850 census when he is listed as living with his parents and several siblings.  He was born sometime between 1841-1844 depending on the source of material.  In the 1850 Pennsylvania census (Brecknock in Lancaster Co.) his father Michael is 36, his mother Lydia (another source says her maiden name was Ulrich) is 30, Lazarus is 8, Elizabeth is 7, Michael is 5, Lydia is 2, and Magdalene is listed as 0.

In the tax list for Pennsylvania of Jan. 1, 1864 he is listed as living in East Earl township, cigars is listed as his occupation, and the tax due appears to be $12.80.

In the tax list for Pennsylvania of March 1864, he is listed as living in Terre Hill (E. Earl Township) and under the column for article or occupation is listed 2 cows, with a tax due of $ 0.80.  There is a Michael Wolf (Father? Brother?) listed 2 lines above him  that has fish _______ (I can't read the second word) in the article or occupation column. I am unsure of exactly what the monetary amount means.

In the December 1865 Pennsylvania tax list, Lazarus is listed on 3 lines in the article/occupation column as owning 9 cattle, 2 calves, and 1 swine for a total tax of $ 3.80.  He is still living in Terre Hill within East Earl Township.

In the 1869 Lancaster County, PA  directory, Lazarus Wolf is listed as butchering and being in Muddy Creek.

In the 1870 Pennsylvania census, he is listed as being in the Brecknock Township of Lancaster Co.  He is listed on pg. 31 as: Lazarus Wolf age 28, a butcher and having a real estate value of $2300. His wife Elizabeth is 23, and children Ida (this is Mary Ida or Ida Mary who would marry John Stover  and become my great grandmother) age 6, Harry age 5, Franklin age 3, Ervin age 1, along with Michael Wolf, age 24 (brother) laborer, and Isaac Ulrich (probably maternal uncle) age 45 and works on farm.

In the 1875 Lancaster County Land Ownership Map, Lazarus shows up in Brecknock Township in the area of Bowmansville.

In the 1880 Pennsylvania census  on pg. 56, Lazarus is listed as 38 with the occupation as "hotel" and himself and parents all born in PA.  His wife Elizabeth is 32, and children: Ida M. as 16, Harry A. as 14 and a cigar-maker, Grant as 12 and a tobacco stripper, Bart as 10, Lila as 9, Alice as 7, Arthur as 4, Janie as 3, and Alonzo as 1.  All are listed as born in Pennsylvania.

In the Lancaster City and County Directory, Lazarus Wolf is listed as "saloon" and in Terre Hill.

In the book "Pennsylvania Marriages, 1709-1940" he is listed as the father of Lila M. Wolf  who married James Cosgrove on 15 April 1890 in Lancaster.

In the 1890 Lancaster Directory (pg. 437), Lazarus is listed as "saloon" in Terre Hill.  Interesting is that there is also a Michael Wolf listed as retired and in Terre Hill.

In the book, "Pennsylvania Marriages 1885-1950" Lazarus is listed as the father of Alice Wolf who married George Weller on 06 June 1891 in Lancaster.

In the book, "Pennsylvania Marriages 1885-1950" Lazarus is listed as the father of Jennie (Janie?) Wolf to Samuel Fair on 18 July 1896 in Lancaster. She was only 19 and Lazarus had to sign his consent to the marriage.

In the 1898 Lancaster Directory (pg. 978) Lazarus is listed as "huckster" and in Terre Hill. I looked up huckster in an 1898 dictionary and it said that meant a person dealing in produce or small grocery items.

In the books, Pennsylvania Marriages 1885-1950" and "Pennsylvania Marriages 1709-1940"  Lazarus is listed as the father of Lydia A. Wolf who married Howard E. Reddig on 17 January 1903 in Lancaster. Lydia is only 18 and Lazarus had to sign his consent to the marriage.

In the book, "Pennsylvania Marriages 1885-1950" Lazarus is listed as the father of Edna Wolf who married Harry Faust on 01 August 1903 in Lancaster.  Edna was 17 so Lazarus had to sign a consent for the marriage.

In the Orphans Court Office of Lancaster County (license 864) is a marriage license issued to Ella Wolf to marry  Calvin Buck on 25 December 1904 in Lancaster. The father is listed as Lazarus Wolf.

According to his death certificate, he died in Ephrata on Feb. 1, 1930.  According to that he was born Sept. 1, 1841 and was a retired butcher. It states he was born in Lancaster County as were his parents, Michael Wolf and Lydia Ulrich.  He is buried at Terre Hill Cemetery.
